DECISIVE MOMENTS Photographs and true tales from ordinary life

Kate from Sunset Ice's sent us information about a new exhibition from the excellent Snapshot Museum. Solely dedicated to The Snapshot; it houses an extensive archive of People's Photography from the last 100 years. The collection includes black and white and colour photographs, slides, negatives, Polaroids, Photobooth, albums, vintage camera equipment, home movies and other photographic ephemera.

DECISIVE MOMENTS
Photographs and true tales from ordinary life

The Winter Gardens Theatre, Morecambe, Lancashire
5th – 27th September 2009

Private view – Friday 4th September 6.30pm

Populated entirely by snapshots, ‘Decisive Moments’ aims to democratise art photography. These pictures were simply taken ‘in the moment’ with no artistic agenda or intent. Forcing a reappraisal and re-evaluation of the humble snapshot – not only as great photography, but as a mirror of our own life experience.

The show is the product of an extensive arts collaboration with senior communities in the North West Region. Displayed inside a pop-up gallery within Morecambe’s Winter Gardens Theatre, the exhibition makes full use of this dramatic and once grandiose setting. Presented with sound pieces from the participants. Sometimes contextualising the image, other times playfully mystifying the viewer.

The work has an electrifying existential resonance today. Showing the timelessness of the human condition. Exploring themes of love, loss, belonging, family, friendship, and the pursuit of happiness. The show challenges preconceived ideas about other people’s lives, ageing, and ultimately our own mortality.
